12 String Acoustic Guitars
12 Strings Guitar
The 12 string acoustic guitars feature 12 strings in 6 courses that are used for producing a richer and more ringing tone as compared to the standard six-string guitars. This type of guitar comes with a natural chorus effect because of the subtle variations in the frequencies produced by both the two strings on each course.
The Concept - In a 12-string acoustic guitar, the strings are placed in courses of two strings and mostly both are played together. Generally, the two strings in each course are tuned an octave apart whereas each pair of strings are tuned in unison in the treble courses. And the tuning in the third course (G) and the second string in the third course (G) varies as some guitarists use a unison string whereas some prefer the distinctive high-pitched quality an octave string. It has been seen that some guitarists will remove some of the doubled strings either for searching a distinctive tone or for ease of performing. For instance, it simplifies the playing running bass lines when you remove the higher octave from the three bass courses, but yet keeps the extra treble strings for the full strums.
In the 12-string acoustic guitars, the tension placed by the strings on the instrument is great and due to this, the 12 string acoustic guitar has a reputation for warping after a few years usage. Some twelve-string acoustic guitars feature non-traditional structural supports in order to prevent or postpone the short age at the expense of structure and tone. Until a few years back, these guitars were globally tuned lower than the traditional in order to reduce the stresses on the guitar.
Chorus Effect – In these guitars, the double ranks of strings produce a shimmering chorus effect. When this special effect is produced successfully, there is no constituent sound is perceived going out of the tune. However, the amalgam of sounds possesses a rich, shimmering quality that is absent if the sound would come from a single source. This effect is more apparent one listens to sounds sustaining for long time like a long guitar chord.
Usage with Fame– The trend of twelve-string acoustic guitar appears to be cyclical: it began in the e '20s and '30s with ‘Blind Willie McTell’ and then in the '40s with Lead Belly. Later it continued with Bob Gibson in the '50s and early '60s. Others like Mike Pender (The Searchers) and Roger McGuinn (The Byrds) used it for a decade. Later, this guitar was revived in the 1980s by rockers like Robert Smith, Dave Gregory and Marty Willson.
